- Best Handmade Dolls for Children – What Should You Look For?
Choosing a handmade doll is very different from choosing a mass-produced toy. A handmade doll is often created to become something much more personal – a childhood companion that can stay with a child for many years. When choosing a handmade doll, look at the quality of the materials, how the doll is constructed, whether its clothes can be changed and, most importantly, whether the doll has enough personality to encourage imaginative play. Natural-looking hair, carefully sewn facial features and handmade clothes can make every doll feel like an individual character rather than just another toy. It is also worth checking who actually makes the doll. Buying directly from a small workshop or family business means you can often learn exactly where and how your doll was created.
**Lulludolls are handmade in our family workshop in Poland.** Each doll is individually sewn and finished by hand. Our dolls can feature beautiful natural alpaca hair, handmade removable clothes and different levels of articulation.
Most importantly, no two handmade Lulludolls are ever completely identical. Small differences are part of their character – and part of what makes receiving a handmade doll so special.

- Handmade Doll vs Plastic Doll – What's the Difference?
Plastic dolls and handmade fabric dolls can both provide hours of play, but they offer very different experiences. Mass-produced plastic dolls are designed to look virtually identical. Thousands or even millions of children may own exactly the same doll.
A handmade fabric doll is different. The texture of fabric, soft body, sewn facial features, natural-looking hair, and individually made clothing create a much warmer and more tactile experience. Because handmade dolls are created individually, small differences naturally appear between them.
For many families, this individuality is precisely the attraction. A handmade doll can also develop its own history. Clothes can be changed, hair can be styled and new accessories can be added. Over time, the doll can become associated with holidays, childhood adventures, photographs and memories. This philosophy is at the heart of **Lulludolls**. We create our dolls individually in our Polish workshop rather than mass-producing them. Many Lulludolls have natural alpaca hair and wardrobes of handmade clothing, while our articulated versions can be posed in many different ways. We like to think of them not simply as dolls, but as little characters waiting for their stories to begin.

- How to Choose a Handmade Doll for a 3–12 Year Old Girl
It is a wonderful age for handmade dolls. They are old enough to appreciate details, clothes and accessories, while imaginative play is often still an important part of their world.
When choosing a doll for this age group, consider four things:
- Personality - Does the doll have a face and style that immediately makes the child want to invent a story about her?
- Hair - Hair that can be gently styled gives children another way to interact with their doll.
- Clothing - Removable clothes greatly extend play possibilities. A doll with additional outfits can change character from one day to the next.
- Movement - A poseable doll can sit, stand in different positions and participate much more naturally in imaginative scenes and photography.
These are exactly the qualities we focus on when creating **Lulludolls**. Our classic dolls are approximately 38 cm (15 inches) tall and are available in different versions, including our highly articulated **F.A.B. – Fully Articulated Body** option. Many models feature natural alpaca hair and handmade removable clothes.
For children who prefer a smaller companion, our **Pocket Lullus** are approximately 25 cm (10 inches) tall – small enough to travel easily in a backpack while still having the character of a full-size handmade doll.

- What Is an Articulated Fabric Doll?
Traditional fabric dolls are usually soft and have relatively limited movement. An articulated fabric doll combines the warmth and softness of a textile doll with a much greater range of movement. Depending on its construction, an articulated doll may be able to move its head, arms and legs and adopt much more natural poses. More sophisticated designs may even include articulated fingers. This makes articulated dolls particularly enjoyable for imaginative play, doll photography and collectors who like to create realistic scenes.
At Lulludolls, we have developed our own highly articulated design called F.A.B. – Fully Articulated Body.
F.A.B. Lulludolls have articulated heads, arms, legs, and even FINGERS. This allows the dolls to sit and pose much more naturally while retaining the soft appearance and unique personality of a handmade fabric doll.
Thanks to their articulated fingers, the dolls can also hold small items, such as teddy bears, sweets, or even house keys.

- Why Alpaca Hair Is Used for Premium Handmade Dolls
Hair has an enormous influence on the personality and character of a handmade doll.
Synthetic fibres are widely used in commercial dolls because they are inexpensive and easy to manufacture consistently. Handmade doll artists, however, have the freedom to choose from much more interesting and natural materials.
One particularly beautiful option is natural alpaca fibre.
Alpaca is exceptionally soft, lightweight, and has a delicate, natural appearance. Individual fibres catch the light differently from synthetic doll hair, creating subtle variations in colour and texture. The result is hair that gives a handmade doll an unusually warm and realistic character.
But alpaca fibre is not only beautiful – it also has several practical advantages.
Unlike sheep’s wool, alpaca fibre contains no lanolin, which can be important for people who are sensitive or allergic to wool. It is also less prone to static electricity than many synthetic fibres and does not absorb moisture easily. Alpaca fibre is relatively lightweight, which is particularly important when it is used to create a full head of hair on a soft fabric doll.
Another wonderful feature is its styling versatility. Alpaca hair can be curled with a curling iron and can also be straightened with a flat iron, allowing the hairstyle to be changed while preserving its beautiful, natural appearance.
Natural alpaca hair has become one of the signature features of many Lulludolls.
We use it because we love the way it complements a textile face. The softness of the fabric and the natural texture of alpaca work beautifully together, making every hairstyle slightly different.
And because natural alpaca fibre is never perfectly uniform, it reinforces something we value very much:
Every handmade doll should have her own personality.
